Artist:  Jim Yellowhawk

BiographyJim Yellowhawk is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Lakota Sioux tribe and an Onondaga/Iroquois on his mother’s side. The arts run in his family – Yellowhawk’s grandmother was well-known for her intricate Lakota beadwork, and his father paints scenes from the memory of his own boyhood on the Cheyenne River Reserve in Green Grass, South Dakota. Yellowhawk’s craft is rooted in his relationships. He portrays traditional symbols – the eagle, the buffalo and the circle – in his art, and many of his compositions are circular and evocative of Lakota star knowledge. Through his art, he celebrates the place of Native People in the family of all our relations. His art employs diverse media forms, as he tends to see most anything as a possible canvas. www.jimyellowhawk.com
